This last statement really dug in when I read it "Hackford sets the tone of the conversation early when he credits Tarantino as the first filmmaker "to turn the mirror on America, and how we started."" It's just not true and the author's choice to reify it bothered me. Ignoring films like Beloved, The Color Purple and the series Roots is part of the cultural blindness we have about the realities of slavery. Choosing to quote a statement of cultural ignorance embracing the Taratinofication of slavery rather than critiquing or at least noting the incorrectness of the statement is a gross oversight. For the record, I enjoy the film overall and mostly just want to point out that he's not the "first" to do anything.
