Long before David Lowery made himself famous for that searing takedown of a certain NPR intern (who'd blithely asserted that she had never paid for any music ever), he fronted a celebrated indie rock band called Camper Van Beethoven. The NorCal group specialized in a freewheeling blend of Americana rock derived from '60s greats like the Byrds and Neil Young, where mandolins and distortion mixed with slide guitar and fiddle, and where set lists might include a cover of a traditional folk tune like "O Death." After nine years without an album, the group comes back Jan. 22 with La Costa Perdida, a smoother and sweeter take on the band's influential sound. This week's show offers a chance to catch up with Lowery's work with both Camper Van Beethoven and his other, more-famous-in-the-'90s band, Cracker.
