As proponents of Gothic folk, Los Angeles chanteuse Chelsea Wolfe and incongruously named Seattle balladeer King Dude explore esoteric subject matter within dark acoustic music. King Dude frontman T.J. Cowgill draws from the drama of early blues, but combines traditional stylings with field recordings, studio manipulation, and dark subject matter. Vacillating between a raspy drawl, gravelly bark, and anguished scream, Cowgill's singing is extremely emotive. Although his lyrics are directly inspired by what he calls "Luciferian" (not Satanic) beliefs, they also function as a skilled arrangement of compelling narrative and imagery. Either way, few artists are as well-suited as King Dude and Wolfe — who performs here on an all-acoustic tour — for our post-apocalyptic era.
