"Panabay" is a genre tag with little clout. But if the Panama City-raised, Oakland-based hip-hop twofer Los Rakas keeps growing in visibility, that should change. Cousins Raka Rich (aka Rico) and Raka Dun (aka DunDun) have repeatedly gone to bat for their neologism, most notably by creating two mixtapes in a series called Panabay Twist. Their specialty is a fusion of clubby, bass-thick beats, empowering swagger, barrio pride, and multicultural idealism. (Three-quarters of their lyrics are in Spanish, the rest in English, and Jamaican dancehall and Puerto Rican plena figure into their instrumentals.) Los Rakas also have big releases forthcoming: "Desorden," a dancefloor-favoring, Diplo-produced single, and Raka Party, a new record, are on track for 2013.
