More About

Wayne McGregor, commander of the Order of the British Empire and resident choreographer for the Royal Ballet, is known for physically demanding work that draws on surprising and wide-ranging collaborators, from architects to neuroscientists. Thanks to S.F. Ballet, two of his pieces have reached our city: Eden/Eden, a cool work of futurism that tackled the topics of cloning and genetic engineering; and the award-winning Chroma, which found its footing in the discordant riffs of the White StripesJack White. Tonight, Program 1 of the 2013 season opens with the world premiere of McGregor’s Borderlands. Set to the music of Joel Cadbury, a latter-day contributor to U.N.K.L.E., Borderlandsuses 12 dancers to explore themes inspired by German-American educator and artist Joseph Albers. Albers, who is best know for his countless nesting squares, taught at the Bauhaus alongside Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee before fleeing the Nazis. Where McGregor will go with this story is anyone’s guess, but it will no doubt be memorable. Program 1 also features Jerome Robbins’s Into the Night and Serge Lifar’s Suite en Blanc.
