Since coming together as Pinback in the early 1990s, Rob Crow and Zach Smith have long been a reticent, enigmatic pair who construct reticent, enigmatic indie rock. Last October's Information Retrieved, the first substantial Pinback release since 2007's Autumn of the Seraphs, doesn't shake that trend. The new album (which follows up two 2011 EPs) shares its most attractive properties with an aged music box you'd break out for rainy day poignancy: It's soothing, melancholy, tuneful, and not too demanding. Information lacks the punchier lures of Autumn, but even so-so Pinback is still pretty fine. Fingers crossed that it won't take five more years for this San Diego outfit to deliver another album.
