The Great Escape

“You awaken, and find yourself locked inside a room. It has a desk, chairs, a carpet — everything seems normal. But on closer inspection you find a series of mysterious codes ...” If that sounds like the opening to a corny choose-your-own adventure book, don’t worry; this is something completely different. It’s the opening advertisement for Escape From the Mysterious Room, the latest live-action puzzle game from Scrap Entertainment. Founder Takao Kato noticed the popularity of online escape games in Japan and decided to bring the experience to life. The Real Escape Game was an immediate success, and Scrap’s second event sold out the 200-seat HEP Hall in Osaka. This is the second offering in the U.S. The first, Escape From the Werewolf Village, focused on discovering which person in the “village” of 100 or so players was the werewolf; Escape From the Mysterious Room sets the player down in a locked room with 10 strangers and an hour to break free. Be warned, Real Escape Games are not for the faint of heart (the door is actually locked), and the puzzles are difficult — the success rate hovers under 10 percent.
