Dengue Fever: Show Preview

Chhom Nimol

Good thing Chhom Nimol questioned her instincts. Around 2001, Ethan and Zac Holtzman were combing the clubs of Long Beach's Cambodia Town in search of the right singer for the fledgling outfit Dengue Fever when they discovered Nimol, a recent immigrant who spoke limited English. Both Nimol and her sister initially found the brothers untrustworthy, but at least one of those skeptics eventually relented. Today, Nimol is still lead vocalist of the L.A.-located "Asian psychedelic" six-piece and — as someone who sings in Khmer and English — a crucial and credible component. Dengue Fever's goulash of chimerical 1960s Cambodian pop, woozy '70s classic rock, and brazen, agile '90s indie rock is a rare treat. The great gifts of 2011's Cannibal Courtship — the squad's fourth and most recent record — testify to the bliss of cultural tourism gone right.
