The "Big Four" of thrash metal were anointed long ago, but if other names are ever considered for that sacredly profane cabal, Testament better damn well be on the shortlist. Like its peers, the outfit traces its history back to Northern California in the early 1980s (let's ignore Anthrax's New York roots), and the band has consistently remained noteworthy through the decades. Last summer's Dark Roots of Earth — one of our 10 Best Bay Area Metal Albums of 2012 — is a smartly produced testimonial to the unflagging virility of this 30-year-old battalion. Testament's 10th record's ragers include "True American Hate," a song that simultaneously mocks our country's trigger-happy war-lust and rah-rah patriotism while unleashing an adrenaline rush so primal, so vicious, that it makes natural disasters look weak. Having your cake and eating it too sure can be fun.
