More About

Opera Parallèle presents the Bay Area premiere of Osvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar, a one-act contemporary opera that explores the relationship between politics and artistic expression. Ainadamar (“Fountain of Tears”) tells the story of avant-garde poet and dramatist Federico García Lorca, who was executed by fascist soldiers during the Spanish Civil War for crimes of cultural radicalism. The piece is told in flashback through the eyes of Lorca advocate and famous exiled Catalan stage actress Margarita Xirgu. Now nearing the 10th anniversary of its Tanglewood debut, this piece has undergone a multimedia transformation. Through video projection, lighting, and modern stage design, Opera Parallèle has created a pulsating and cinematic viewing experience. The company enlisted local flamenco choreographer La Tania to draw on Lorca’s work. The performance also features soprano Marnie Breckenridge and mezzo soprano Lisa Chavez in Ainadamar’s famous trouser role. Opera Parallèle honors Lorca as a symbol for freedom of artistic expression with a vibrant, confrontational production loaded with artistic exuberance.
