Be part of the revolution with today’s daylong African-American literary festival, Free Your Mind, showcasing a fabulous array of authors, visual artists, activists, intellectuals, and storytellers. Part of the library’s Black History Month programming, this literary extravaganza opens with Kirk Waller’s musical storytelling performance of an African/African-American folktale. The festival also brings New York Times bestselling author Mary “Honey B” Morrison, former Black Panther Ericka Huggins, and Block Report Radio founder JR Valrey in a discussion on revolution and the written word. Take a break around 1 p.m. and enjoy some light refreshments at the Author Showcase and Reception and support Bay Area writers while listening to hip-hop and spoken word artist Jelal. But be sure to come back for the keynote address by renowned educator and activist Dr. Oba T’Shaka at 4 p.m., commemorating San Francisco’s civil rights movement.
