Voices Carry

On International Women's Day, the Iranian women's nonprofit organization 30Voices addresses their often complicated, too often oppressed, but defiantly beautiful lives. These women dare to be heard through song, dance, music, poetry, and epic stories, specifically the story of Tahmineh, a female heroine in the Persian epic poem Shahnameh, written by Ferdowsi between ca. 977 and 1010 AD. Catch the free exhibition of Iranian paintings and sculptures under an elaborate Ghashghai tent earlier in the evening, but be sure to stick around for the live performances and dances at 8 p.m. Attendance goes to a very good cause: 30Voices not only raises aware-ness about domestic abuse, but also assists and rehabilitates victims of abuse, both the Iranian women and their families.
