White Arrows with !!!, the Yellow Dogs, and the Mallard. 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Great American Music Hall. $21-$23.
Genres: Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. Musicians often foam at the mouth when forced to broach the subject of stylistic categories, but terminology is crucial to conversation. The smart folks devise their own terms to steer the dialogue in a direction they like. White Arrows is a good example: The 3-year-old L.A. five-piece has genially (and half-jokingly) called itself "tropical crunk" and "psychotropical." The first term contains only a shred of truth, but the second really works. Last year's Dry Land Is Not a Myth, the band's debut full-length, is a rainbow-hued escape of sparkling guitar tones and shimmy-your-shoulders drum beats. If it ever gets really gloomy outside, toss White Arrows onto a playlist alongside Reptar, Fool's Gold, and Vampire Weekend, and let your sunniest daydreams unfold.
