At first blush, "CHVRCHES" reads like the assertive moniker of a scowling black metal band. But this Glasgow three-piece makes music that's leagues softer and more vulnerable. Establishing itself in late 2011, the hotly hyped outfit is steered by Lauren Mayberry's lithe, girlish cadence (which would have made her a superstar circa 1984), and Iain Cook and Martin Doherty's kaleidoscopic layers of melodic electro-pop — all of which is then topped off with gratifyingly high-fidelity production. On the title tune of upcoming EP Recover, Mayberry pours herself into its dramatic mega-chorus ("I'll give you one more chance to say/ We can change or part ways/ And you take what you need/ And you don't need me") with such chutzpah that it's easy to believe this crew will be radio-huge one day.
