To speak of long-term development with respect to certain bands is to chart the course of the sun across a cloud-covered winter sky: So it is with Scotland's enchantingly dour The Twilight Sad, whose songs are gloomy trances of bluster, brogue, and fuzz that have nonetheless sharpened to a point over six years and three albums. No One Can Ever Know, released last February, is the ensemble's most delicately crushing effort yet, less a barrage of bleary guitars than a whole palette of bleary sounds, a tuneful slab of the sort of love and squalor (if you will) that usually take at least a novel to establish.
