Yo La Tengo: Show Preview

With Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon separated, there's no one close to matching Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley's status as the first couple of indie rock. Together with bassist James McNew, Kaplan and Hubley have kept their critically adored, restless musical vehicle Yo La Tengo on the move since 1984, consistently releasing albums and touring frequently without ever declining in quality. The New Jersey outfit's latest effort, Fade, is another collection of 10 gorgeously droning, charmingly oblique songs rendered in fuzz-soaked guitar melodies, wistful string parts, and Kaplan and Hubley's disarming purr. The band's live shows — in which Yo La Tengo draws on the highlights of its 30-year catalog, finding constant surprises — are a joy all their own.
