California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, was assassinated inside City Hall with then-Mayor George Moscone on Nov. 27, 1978. That night, a candlelight vigil for the men was attended by over 25,000 mourners. Among them was the recently formed San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, who sang "Thou, Lord, Hast Been Our Refuge" by Felix Mendelssohn, in its first public performance. Now in its 35th year, the chorus celebrates its ties to the civil-rights icon with its season-opening concert Harvey Milk 2013. The show features the premiere of I Am Harvey Milk and I Am the Legacy, both oratorios that focus on the life and times of Milk. Legacy draws from pieces submitted by various Bay Area artists, while the chorus' own I Am Harvey Milk features Andrew Lippa as Harvey Milk, and Tony award-winner Laura Benanti as the Soprano soloist. Musical accompaniment is provided by the Bay Area Rainbow Symphony.
