Highs and Lows From the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

Rufus Wainwright wore an awful, paint-splattered suit to Davies Symphony Hall, but dazzled the assembled mellow masses anyway. He toured through what was basically a greatest hits set with a little swagger, a splash of self-deprecating charm, and, most importantly, staggering talent.

KMEL's Summer Jam offered singalong-worthy performances from Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, and J. Cole. But the real show, as always, was in the crowd, where a spirited group wearing too-small tops and too-tall heels started mini-parties that got security grumbling.

• Buy your earplugs now: My Bloody Valentine is coming to the Bill Graham Civic Aug. 23. Yes, our ears are still ringing from the band's awesome — and deafening — show in 2008, but we can't wait to hear the new songs from mbv live.

Fizzle

Grammy-nominated rapper 2 Chainz was robbed at gunpoint in S.F. only hours before taking the stage at KMEL's Summer Jam in Oakland. Police are still looking for suspects, who apparently relieved the 35-year-old rapper of a wallet and cellphone. But don't worry — no chainz were stolen.

• Swedish electronic wizard the Field bored us to death at the Independent. His solo show, billed as a special audio-visual performance, consisted of him producing monotonous ambient noise while a screen projection showed a dull tableau of trees and sky. By halfway through, many people had left — and we can't blame 'em.

• Remember Alien Ant Farm's irritating cover of "Smooth Criminal"? Well, the band is back with an awful song called "Let Em Know." Which reminds us of the time we had to interview the band's frontman, Dryden Mitchell, and he was a total jerk. And then a few months later, he got punched out at an awards ceremony — for being a total jerk.
