Bringing Back the Big Top

Life has been a circus at SF Weekly lately. Our annual Best Of San Francisco issue was circus themed, and that meant long meetings with clowns, jugglers, acrobats, and contortionists. Then when news broke that a local performer went a little haywire in the BART station, it conjured up a whole other spectacle. If there is one thing that story made us long for, it's a time when the circus was simply that: a circus. That's where Shine, the new show from Circus Bella comes in. The folks at Bella believe that a circus should be "a celebration of joy, community and achieving the impossible." Shine doesn't disappoint. Static trapeze, contortion, wire-walking, and a nine-person juggling act are all presented in the traditional American circus style, with poise, grace, and smiles large enough for the whole family. There is also a special appearance from Oakland's Prescott Youth Circus, and music composed by multi-instrumentalist Rob Reich. These acrobats will keep their costumes on, and will only go haywire, on the highwire.
