Kronos Quartet: Show Preview

The repertoire of San Francisco chamber ensemble Kronos Quartet is both large and staggeringly diverse. As likely to collaborate with minimalist composers like Philip Glass as to interpret the pop songs of Bob Dylan or Television, Kronos Quartet is a venerable institution of contemporary classical music. But if Kronos is a groundbreaking classical ensemble with fascinating forays into pop, Geographer is a progressive local rock group with interesting forays into classical. For the opening slot with Kronos Quartet, the band's densely textured electronic pop will feature a string quartet of its own, making this week's lineup representative of both the new and old guard of progressive music.

Arcade Fire opened their US tour at Shoreline Amphitheater to a full house who was there in support of their album "Reflector," which was released last fall. Dan Deacon opened the show to a happily surprised early audience and got the crowd actively dancing and warmed up. DEVO was originally on the bill to support Arcade Fire but a kayak accident last week had sidelined lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh and the duration of the west coast leg of the tour. Win Butler did a homage to DEVO by performing Uncontrollable Urge.
