The local press has documented many problems with the construction of the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge. There were galvanized steel snafus, an absurd loss of paperwork and several broken bolts, all of it reported prominently. But for the last 15 years (and with a bit less fanfare), photographer Joseph A. Blum has been working on a different sort of documentation: the folks doing the actual work. The results are spectacular. In The Bridge Builders, Blum — a welder and boilermaker for 25 years — gives the public an above the scene's eye view of the span's creation. There is an immense physicality behind building the first large, self-anchored suspension bridge in the world, and Blum captures it adeptly through his photos. "There would not be a bridge without the men and women who are building it," he says. "I have attempted to photograph the building of this bridge from their perspective."
