11 Years of off-the-Cuff Tales

Put a human being on stage, have them tell a story that happened to them — without the use of notes — and the result is inevitably a human experience. If that seems obvious, it's also widely appreciated: Every month for the last 11 years, Porchlight has been filling venues across the city with people of all ages and from all modes of life. It's true that everyone has a story, and this might be especially true here in San Francisco: Each show presents a handful of often profoundly different people, for just a moment, explaining themselves publicly. As with any authentic artistic experience, notions of good and bad dissolve into something more fundamental: humanity. For the anniversary shows, organizers reprise some of their favorite stories and invite some of their favorite storytellers to tell new ones. This year's show will feature British bookbinder Dominic Riley, Y.A. author and frontman of punk rock band the Mr. T Experience Frank Portman, musician and talent-booker Anthony Bedard, and others. The theme: "As Luck Would Have It."
