Atamira Dance Company of New Zealand arrives on the shores of the continental U.S. for the first time on July 27 for the San Francisco International Arts Festival. The company combines urban technique and indigenous Maori tradition to create unique dances with a political message: the mana whenua of Aotearoa — or, the territorial rights to the tribal lands of New Zealand. The company will demonstrate defiance and spirituality during its visit to San Francisco, performing a ceremonial blessing on New Zealand's boat for the America's Cup races before their concert at the Joe Goode Performance Annex, where they will present the Maori haka, or war dance. The festivities continue on Sunday, when they teach the traditional ka mate ka mate dance to members of the public before a Maori hangi banquet, with food slow-cooked in a subterranean pit, shared in an evening with the Ohlone Nation.
