Moonrise Kingdom is a story of forbidden love, a story of leaving it all behind, and a story of staring authority in the face, then sticking a thumb squarely in its eye. The film follows a 12-year-old orphan, one Sam Shakusky, and his chosen-for-life partner Suzy Bishop (also 12), as they run away from the bizarrely chipper Camp Ivanhoe. There are chase scenes with pushy counselors, lots of binoculars, and, of course, underwear dancing. It's a story that San Francisco's many transplants can surely relate to, having run away from our own oppressive situations to seek adventure (and underwear dancing) by the Golden Gate. It's also a chance to see Edward Norton, who looked so serious in American History X, utter lines like "Jiminy Cricket, he flew the coop," with complete sincerity. And it all takes place in one of San Francisco's finest parks, Washington Square, courtesy of the hardworking folks behind Film Night in the Park.
