Have you ever taken a selfie and immediately checked in using the GPS on your smartphone? Do you ever snap photos of strangers while pretending to text? Do you tweet about things you would never tell your mother? Of course you do. The Kinetech art and science collective's new evening-length work 4SEE, presented Sept. 6 and 7 at KUNST-STOFF Arts, explores the concept and practice of surveillance in contemporary society. The performance reflects upon technologies such as cellphones and social networks, which have become an indispensible part of daily life, but which track every step we take. Does the cycle of surveillance oppress or emancipate? Do acts of surveillance separate the watcher from the watched, or are they co-conspirators in the performance of modern life? Using phones, drones, and software projections, dancers play a game of cat and mouse among themselves and with the audience. 4SEE is presented in conjunction with Daiane Lopes da Silva's new solo work, "In the Night."
