The Movies Seen Round the World

Future Shorts, the largest worldwide pop-up film festival, returns to San Francisco with a selection of some of the best classic, cult, and award-winning short films from around the world, specially curated every three months by Future Shorts HQ in London. Anyone, anywhere can put together a screening of the feature-length program; San Francisco's joins film enthusiasts in Japan and Europe, and cities like Irkutsk, Russia, and Doha, Qatar. The Summer Season Program features Ireland Folk Furniture, a curious animated short that somehow makes magic of the difficult sentiments engrained in being Irish, as well as British Independent Film Award winner Volume. With small theaters closing all around the city (and country) as the number of moviegoers declines, special events like these keep worldwide film accessible to those looking to see something other than the limited fare that remaining theaters must stick with to keep afloat. A bar and snacks will also be provided.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
