Sizzle and Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Week in S.F. Music

Tom Waits hasn't toured since 2008, but he's just been added to the Sunday lineup for Neil Young's acoustic Bridge School Benefit concert at Shoreline. Expect Waits to play songs from 2011's Bad As Me, with a band that includes Les Claypool.

At an emo concert, you expect to sing along to songs about adolescence. But when Jimmy Eat World played the Warfield, what came across most was this Arizona quartet's quiet willingness to grapple with things that are bigger than them, bigger than any of us.

The phrase "jazz jam session" might be a turn-off, but these informal sessions offer some killer opportunities to see excellent players in fluid, unrehearsed conditions. Check our blog for a round-up of the best jam sessions in S.F. and Oakland.

There was a time, not too long ago, when San Francisco had more than a handful of small, divey dancefloors. This week, Lost in the Night's Derek Opperman said goodbye to one of the best, as the monthly O.K. Hole held its last event at tiny Mission bar Amnesia.

Bruno Mars will perform at the 2014 Super Bowl halftime show, basically guaranteeing carcinogenic levels of twerpiness and a nauseating volume of winks. But there is hope for the future, in the form of an online petition to get costumed metal lords GWAR to play in 2015. Sign it now!

Twitter users probably know that we talk about twerking way more than we talk about Syria. But new data confirms this sad state of affairs: From July 2012 to Sept. 2013, 775,000 geocoded Tweets mentioned twerking, while only 75,000 mentioned Syria.

Moral: "You have to listen to GWAR and drink beer out of a paper bag to be cool in our town."

PS in full disclosure i wrote this story MYSELF, after being ignored in SF for nearly a decade!! (with the exception of musician/ artists/ beatnik types. i had my songs covered by TWO- count em- SF bands!!) Thanks, SF Weakly!

Read about Jesse Mills!! Who lived under a tarp in Golden Gate Park for a solid EIGHT YEARS, busking the Civic Center BART station... only to be picked up by his childhood hero Evan Dando of the Lemonheads and tour the east/ and west coast. Has become something of a cult hero to many, and is about to film a music video for the same team who shot the hit Die Antwoord singles. music HERE not all good music in SF requires a slimy tank tank top and hackneyed Black Keys chords. some makes it out from the heap.
