Jacco Gardner: Show Preview

Nick Helderman

How does someone born in 1989 have such a grasp of 1960s baroque pop? Did they have parents or older siblings with extensive record collections? Whatever it is, Netherlands multi-instrumentalist and whiz-kid Jacco Gardner has absorbed the styles and ambiences of the '60s popsters who charged their songs with gloriously ornate, baroque wonder — think the Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee," much of the Zombies, and Donovan at his most flower-powerful. Their styles conjoined autumnal, wispy, ethereal motifs with solid beats and surging choruses, and Gardner recaptures all that without any cutesy retro baggage. His voice also shares some of the wry, elfin qualities of Syd Barrett and Robyn Hitchcock, making for a nigh-on irresistible package.
