Sex Play

If you're gonna do it, do it right. Safe sex advocate and graphic designer Buzz Bense has been creating and collecting sex-positive posters since 1982, and more than 100 of them are on display with tips to keep you happy and healthy in "SAFE SEX BANG." The title refers to the double whammy of maintaining morale in LGBT communities in the face of HIV/AIDS while disseminating life-saving information, giving outreach programs more bang for their buck. Posters were gathered from San Francisco to New York, and beyond, including work by the late David McDiarmid, artist and political activist from Australia, the groundbreaking "Play Fair!" brochure by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, large bus shelter posters, and work created by Bense himself. "These posters do more than chart the tragedy of an epidemic, of an outsider community reeling from grief, loss, and the decimation of a blooming culture of sexual liberation," Bense said. "The history of these posters is a story of a fight against stigma, hatred, and ignorance; of a community stepping up to take care of its own."
