More About

Some "bands" are manifestations of essentially one person. In 1995 Vancouver's Dan Bejar more or less became Destroyer: singing, writing, and playing most of his own instruments. Bejar's chief inspirations seem to be maverick U.K. songsters David Bowie and Kevin Ayers, and droll, quirky popsters like Prefab Sprout and the Monochrome Set — he's known for mordant lyrics, slightly precious vocalizing, and idiosyncratic but efficiently catchy melodies. Destroyer's latest, Five Spanish Songs, finds Bejar interpreting the work of his Spanish "counterpart," Señor Chinarro, aka Antonio Luque, a Catalonian alt-rocker with a simpatico style, and is sung entirely in Spanish. The crunchy T. Rex stomp of "El Rito" should bridge the English- and Spanish-speaking parts of our planet à la "La Bamba." This week finds him performing solo in support of the new release.
