The Sonics: Show Preview

As one of the greatest garage-punk bands to emerge in the U.S. in the 1960s, Tacoma quintet the Sonics helped establish a long tradition of unhinged Northwestern rock with the raucous three-chord blast of "The Witch" in 1964. Following in the footsteps of pioneering fellow Tacoma band the Wailers, the group upped the garage-rock ante with singer/keyboardist Jerry Roslie's feral howl and the darker subject matter addressed on such ferocious ragers as "Strychnine" and "Psycho." Though the original lineup would fall apart by 1968, the influence of the seminal albums Here Are the Sonics and Boom echoes on in the band's modern punk and garage disciples. Reuniting regularly since 2007, the current group with Roslie, founding guitarist Larry Parypa, and honking OG sax man Rob Lind comes to the Bay Area for two shows as part of the Total Trash Halloween Bash, sharing the stage with the likes of former Flamin' Groovies/Phantom Movers singer Roy Loney, Wounded Lion, and more.
