Sizzle and Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

We spoke with Exodus frontman Gary Holt about his long run with the Bay Area metal stalwarts, and his time filling in for the late Jeff Hanneman in Slayer. The hardworking Holt says Exodus is working on a new album, and entering rehearsals for it this month. Somehow he keeps his thrash metal songs straight.

In other metal news, the crazy dude who makes synchronized Christmas lights shows to Slayer has a new display up this year, and it's shred-tastic, complete with head-banging snowmen. "Angel of Death" has never looked so festive, so go check out the video on our blog, and play it loud.

Longtime local DJ and frequent contest winner Goldenchyld told us about winning the Redbull Thre3style Battle: "I didn't think what was winning at the time was really all that incredible... I challenged myself and told myself that if no one is doing it the way I think it should be done, then go and do it and see if it works."

Fizzle

It's a sad day for S.F. garage rock: Longtime scene leaders Thee Oh Sees are taking an indefinite hiatus as frontman John Dwyer relocates to L.A. No shows are scheduled for the time being, but the band will have a new LP in early 2014. Thee Oh Sees have evolved through many iterations; hopefully this is just one more.

Chata Gutierrez, a longtime community radio DJ and Mission native, died after a 12-year battle with liver cancer. Gutierrez hosted Con Clave on KPOO every Saturday from 1979 to 2013, a program we deemed the best salsa radio show in 2000. She was also a well-known party DJ around town who volunteered her time on the radio.

The battle for world's smuggest couple comes down to two videos from Jay Z and Beyonce on one hand, and Katy Perry and John Mayer on the other. The former's "Drunk in Love" wins the award for TMI with its reference to sliding panties around, but Perry and Mayer's "Who You Love" tries way too hard to look lovey. We declare an icky draw.
