Sugar Candy Mountain: Show Preview

Some people have too much music in them for one particular avenue. One such local is alt-pop doyenne Ash Reiter: Her solo trip finds Reiter building upon the Spector/Bacharach foundation of refined, poignant pop, while Sugar Candy Mountain — co-led with her drummer Will Halsey — is a surreal amalgam of fuzz- and reverb-laden psychedelic pop, with aspects of the Braziliana of Os Mutantes and Gilberto Gil. Sugar Candy Mountain's album Mystic Hits shimmers like an idyllic dream, one in which Syd Barrett, the Flaming Lips, and Sergio Mendes tip cocktails in Sao Paulo. Appropriately enough, the band will take listeners on a sultry, lysergic sonic vacation this New Year's Eve at Amnesia Bar.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
