Sizzle and Fizzle: Highs and Lows from the Last Week in S.F. Music

Sizzle

We rounded up the 10 best Bay Area metal albums of 2013, and it wasn't all about Deafheaven — though their breakthrough was arguably the biggest S.F. success story of the year. If you missed Hot Lunch, Vhöl, Grayceon, Orchid, and a few others, you missed a great year in heavy local music.

Speaking of metal, Metallica's Kirk Hammett will rejoin his original band, the pioneering local thrash outfit Exodus, for a jam session next month. Hammett is convening horror stars and fanatics at Regency Ballroom for a three-day Fear FestEvil, and plans to go onstage for encores with both Exodus and Death Angel.

The Go Bang! party deals in old-school disco — not the Travolta crap, but the real sound — and has found a very nice new home at the Stud, where it moved from Deco Lounge. Lost in the Night stopped in last weekend and found Chicago DJ Michael Serafini dropping loopy sounds on an enthusiastic crowd.

Fizzle

Thee Oh Sees' John Dywer decamped to L.A., but not before taking a few shots at gentrifying S.F. "NOBODY can square up a joint like rich people," he wrote in a press release for the local band POW! "There goes the taqueria that used to kick ass, replaced by a deli with a line of assholes a mile long ... what the fuck is happening?"

Coinye West is the name of a new digital currency that, aside from the cartoonish image gracing its virtual surface, has absolutely nothing to do with Kanye West. It's further proof that people really can't resist even the stupidest of puns. You can get yours starting Jan. 11. No word yet on whether Yeezy will be investing.

It's a new year, so can we please find a new song? U2's "New Year's Day" is haggard, dull, and overplayed. To summon that wintry brand of cautious optimism that goes with early January, may we instead suggest the Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year," or even Death Cab's "The New Year"?
