Move over, Café: Your time as the Castro's reigning gay bar is over. In fact, the entire Castro is a bore, a relic of the past -- and besides the Café's puny boogie space, there's nowhere to dance. Head to SOMA, where the straight folks know how to put on a party, at least on Friday nights, when the Endup goes gay with its very popular "Fag Fridays." The club has gotten a bad name as the site of one too many drug overdoses, but the formerly wild-eyed, tripping crowd has become much more manageable as the result of a zero-tolerance policy. Open until sunrise (alcohol sales stop promptly at 2 a.m.), this is where people "end up" when all the other bars close. But one can also make a night of it at the Endup, starting and ending in one convenient location. The dancing is the biggest draw, with the music mixes actually fun to listen and dance to. The outdoor patio, complete with water fountain, is a wonderful escape. The ski lodge-like lounge area, with working fireplace and multilevel sitting nooks, encourages conversation. (In a gay bar, no less!) There's a pool table, too -- which is open all night, unlike the one at the Café, which puts a board over its pool table after 10 p.m. so people can sit on it and pose.
