The macabre wit of the late, great New Yorker cartoonist is alive and breeding at this strikingly realized Mission District restaurant. It's difficult to check out the interior design from outside; you have to commit yourself and plunge on in. Once past the heavy draperies, let your eyes adjust to the candlelight and absorb your surroundings: the gilt-framed mirrors, the numerous and individually wrought chandeliers dripping with faux crystal, the intricately flourished, salmon-hued walls, the faded Victorian opulence. Christina Ricci would fit right in, and Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre, and Francisco José de Goya in a genial mood. P.S. The food's good too.
