Best Monk-Staffed Mystic Christian Bookstore - 2001
Archangel
St. Francis taught the world to leave the flesh to rot and let the spirit soar, but in the meantime it's fun to collect posters and badges with pictures of martyred saints instead of decadent rock stars. At Archangel, robed Russian Orthodox monks with courteous smiles and copious facial hair sell books and icons for the budding Christian visionary. This Byzantine Borders is one-stop shopping for gorgeous prints, crucifixes, and Gregorian chant CDs. Several nights a week, they also serve coffee and snacks for lectures and discussion circles with topics such as "The Mountain of the Servants of God: The Monasticism of the Syrian East." All are invited to participate, they say -- Orthodox and non-Orthodox, Christian, and pagan.
