The humble sausage may be the ideal culinary tidbit. Deceptively simple, richly satisfying, and infinitely varied, sausages have been proliferating and evolving since Homer wrote about them in the Odyssey, and for cause: Properly prepared, they're crisp, luscious, sweet, and spicy all at once, the perfect portable snack. Rosamunde is a hip, cozy temple to this ancient delicacy. Out of their tiny Haight storefront the proprietors serve up a dozen delectable varieties, including knackwurst, bockwurst, bratwurst, andouille, a smoked-lamb sausage with sun-dried tomatoes, a smoked-duck sausage with juniper berries and hazelnuts, and a seafood sausage with snapper, scallops, and shrimp. They're served on soft, warm buns with your choice of sauerkraut, grilled onions, peppers, or beanless chili, and when you bite into their crackly exteriors and experience the fragrant delights within, the past three millennia suddenly make some sort of visceral sense.
