Best Bowling for People With Bad BacksHyperBowl
HyperBowl Sony's Metreon Entertainment Center, 101 Fourth St. (at Mission), 369-6013, www.metreon.com
Swinging a 14-pound ball backward and forward before flinging it toward 10 pins is hardly ergonomically correct, which is why those who want the old-fashioned thrill of bowling without the backache should turn to HyperBowl. At the Metreon's cyberbowling station there's no donning stinky old bowling shoes or cramming fingers into holes many have fingered before. You simply push a stationary ball, which rolls in place, and guide it toward virtual pins displayed on a big screen with unconventional backdrops. Depending on which backdrop you choose, you can strike, spare, and gutter-ball along the streets of San Francisco or Tokyo or in the forest in Yosemite. A 10-spot will get a game for two, which takes less than half an hour. It's not a pastime for purists, but hey, at least beer is served.
