McDonald's Bookshop

There are magazines piled all over this rambling, ramshackle, elephantine bookstore that happily describes itself as "a dirty poorly lit place for books." McDonald's opened its doors in 1926 and today boasts the largest selection of used magazines, books, and records in California. Wandering through this labyrinth of nooks, crannies, chambers, and mezzanines, all of them stacked floor to ceiling with vintage reading material, one might assume that organization isn't a priority, but the directory at the front of the store will steer you to the subject matter you desire. Magazines are arranged by topic -- art, fashion, sports, entertainment, foreign language, you name it -- and you'll find complete runs of Life, Playboy, Vogue, Sports Illustrated, and National Geographic. Although you'll have to paw through the stacks to find the issue you want, it's a fun way to blow an afternoon.
