Ghetto Gumbo

Keep your dial pinned to the commercial urban radio stations in the area, and it's easy to come away with the impression that little, if any, hip hop is created outside of Los Angeles, New York, or Atlanta. With the exception of MC E-40, our beloved wordsmith from Vallejo, KMEL and Wild 94.9 largely ignore local artists these days. Flip it, reverse it, and add some community service and political activism announcements, and that pretty much describes Ghetto Gumbo. Rather than show more love to the Dirty South or South Central, host K-Maxx instead spotlights the fertile talent from the 'hoods of Potrero, Fillmore, and East Oakland. Listen to some not-quite-ready-for-prime-time MCs share airspace with veterans like San Quinn and Richie Rich on the most uncompromising hip hop show in the Bay Area.
