Each Halloween San Francisco's costume shops overflow with folks looking to rent kitschy gear for an evening -- did you want to be a flapper, a chicken, or a medieval warrior? But the most elegant, amazing costumes by far are to be found at ACT's Costume Shop, an offshoot of the famed theatrical company, at which the clothing that swathed actors in past productions can be rented for about $100 per week. The cost is relatively high, but it's worth it for big events: We know of one woman who rented her art deco wedding dress here. The choices are practically limitless -- high-fashion ball gowns, 18th-century men's suits, queenly Elizabethan gear complete with high-necked ruffs. The shop is only open by appointment, but the friendly fitters are more than willing to let you browse without harassment.
