My Trick Pony
Oh, the tyranny of the T-shirt. Stroll down Haight Street and the situation appears positively oppressive: You're either stuck with an overpriced ironic vintage concert tee ("Journey World Tour 1983") or one of a hundred new tees with a Curious George knockoff smiling back at you. How to free yourself from this cycle of fashion frustration? Visit My Trick Pony. Founded in 2005 by Matteo Tacchini, the store offers the tools for you to design pretty much any pattern you want and then plunk it onto a shirt, skirt, tie, pair of underwear ... you name it. As its Web site accurately proclaims: "The possibilities are endless." What separates MTP from that guy at Fisherman's Wharf who can slap a slogan on a hoodie, however, is Tacchini's own quirky design sensibilities. In addition to offering hundreds of patterns and fonts to choose from (assuming you didn't arrive with your own), he's great at walking you through the process so that your garment truly stands out. (And his interests don't stop at fashion design; MTP also hosts monthly movie nights and doubles as an art gallery.) T-shirt lovers, rejoice the sky is finally the limit.
