Readers' Choice: Yank Sing
This sprawling palace of pork buns is the king of local Hong Kong–style lunch joints. It might be a bit overwhelming for the uninitiated gwai lo, what with the half-screaming waiters hurdling in tight circles around the tables with steaming carts of cow stomach, but there's no other place in town that can offer such a quintessential, exciting Chinatown lunch. The food is cheap (you can eat yourself silly for under $10) and savory enough to ensure that you'll never again visit that overhyped Financial District favorite, Yank Sing. Though Gold Mountain takes particular pride in its congee (rice porridge), all the staples — steamed or baked pork dumplings, bean curd cakes, shrimp fried or in rice paper dumplings — are exceptional. Finish things off with a nice, cool bowl of mango pudding and a couple of daan tat egg tarts, and you'll leave Gold Mountain thinking you've just lunched in heaven.
