If, like us, you never recovered from the death of your childhood dog, for therapy you can drive down to Fort Funston, which is home to the largest, most helter-skelter dog park we've ever had the pleasure to survey. Among more than 200 dogs counted during one trip, we encountered an Afghan hound, a couple of Great Danes, a standard schnauzer, some swift coonhounds, a raucous Bouvier des Flandres, and an Irish wolfhound, as well as pack after pack of beautiful mongrels fetching, wrestling, humping, and just having fun. But what really separates this dog park from others isn't the sheer number of canines, but the setting. Only in San Francisco can you pet cute critters and hike decent trails with the ocean as the backdrop.
