Carnelian Room - CLOSED
If you're going to sip a cocktail at a sky-view bar, you might as well pick the one on top of the tallest building in town and get your money's worth. The Carnelian Room rests 781 feet above downtown San Francisco, and when you're sitting by the window you feel like you're floating above the city even before you've ordered your first martini. The Room (named for the carnelian marble that gives the Bank of America building its malevolent countenance) is actually made up of a cocktail lounge, a main dining room, and 11 private rooms; all of them offer stunning vistas encompassing much of Northern California and are richly decorated in antiques and objets d'art. They're more elegant in appearance and ambience than the other, stumpier sky-view spots in S.F. The lounge opens at 3 p.m.; jacket and tie recommended.
