Hotel Boheme
When our friends visit from London and New York, we put them up at Hotel Bohme because it's fabulously cosmopolitan (right in the heart of North Beach) without being absurdly spendy. Rooms run from $159 to $189, and they're sumptuous: no chintz bedspreads or hideous floral artwork here. The furniture runs from wrought-iron beds to antique armoires you want to cart home, and the walls are painted rich shades of pumpkin and tomato. But just because it's funky doesn't mean it's not modern; each room has cable TV and free Wi-Fi in addition to a little bistro table and chairs. Needless to say, you can walk to any number of outstanding restaurants within minutes, from traditional Italian at Enrico's to scrumptious Afghan cuisine at the Helmand, and hit all the usual North Beach haunts (Tosca, City Lights Bookstore, Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store).
