Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks was created, according to legend, when a fed-up Great Spirit split up a mountainous married couple who wouldn't stop fighting. Later on, poetic conquistadores named the peaks the Breasts of the Indian Maiden. Nowadays the second and third highest points in the city (900-plus feet above the center of San Francisco) are most famous for their magnificent panoramic vistas of the entire Bay Area. But just as impressive as the legends and landscapes are Twin Peaks' optimal kite-flying conditions. The winds and currents are powerful and practically continuous — trek up here with your parafoils and windwheels and just try to keep them grounded — and the grassy, rocky slopes afford ideal perches for tacking and reeling. The northeast bearing is our favorite launching point, with oceanic gusts roaring up from behind and the bay and bridges forming a memorable backdrop.
