Comments (0) Best Polaroid Artist - 2006
Darwin Bell
Whenever we see someone pull out a Polaroid at a party or a club and start taking pictures, our cynicism kicks in and we get annoyed. What's with the Warholian shtick? But for the past year, Polaroid artist Darwin Bell has quietly taken shots of words he's found on store and street signs as he walks around the city, then crafted them into sentences and phrases, creating something distinctive. Simple enough, yes, but his eye for mixing these ordinary words into clever, vibrant statements keeps his work from looking like a senior class art project, turning it into something astoundingly smart and surprisingly original. Not a trained artist in the typical sense, Bell initially created his pieces (he refers to his body of work as "Sign Language") as a gift for a friend. But since selling out his first two shows, he's gained credibility and a healthy fan base. We just think his stuff looks cool.
