Since 1973, the San Francisco Herb Co. has been providing freshly packaged, top-grade herbs and spices to a discerning clientele at bargain prices. Entering this tiny storefront is a musky, fragrant, eye-opening experience: One-pound cellophane bags of twigs, roots, ferns, buds, seeds, leaves, flowers, and cones line the walls, and there's more than just parsley, sage, rosemary and astralagus root among the 400-plus offerings: chapparal leaf, white willow bark, ponderosa cones, 18-inch cinnamon sticks, and Spanish saffron at $70 an ounce are as close as the warehouse out back. In addition to the herbs and spices (available by the sack or wholesale), the establishment sells blends, extracts, and a wide array of oils (gardenia, honeysuckle, and wisteria among them) as well as vials, filters, muslin sacks, spice jars, mortars and pestles — all the necessities for pie, poultice, and potpourri alike.
